Template:Organization The 43rd Battalion, also known as the Killer Aiwha, was a clone trooper unit in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In 21 BBY, the 43rd participated in the Battle of Jabiim and was stationed in Shelter Base, a Republic outpost on the planet. During the battle, the battalion was completely wiped out when the Separatist forces attacked Shelter Base. The battle later ended with a Republic defeat, as the Republic suffered severe causalities.

History[edit | edit source]

The 43rd Battalion was a clone trooper unit in the Galactic Republic's Grand Army during the Clone Wars, a galactic conflict between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The battalion was nicknamed "Killer Aiwha,"[1] named after a flying creature from the planet Kamino.[2] In 21 BBY,[3] the planet Jabiim seceded from the Republic, resulting in a task force being sent to reconquer the world.[4] After landing on the planet, the 43rd joined the Republic force and was stationed at an outpost called Shelter Base while other forces of the Grand Army moved against three Separatist holdings.[1]

Opposing the Republic offensive, Separatist Commander Alto Stratus launched a counterattack on the insufficiently defended Shelter Base. During a stormy night, the Separatist troops used hailfire droids to bombard Shelter Base. Thirty-two members of the 43rd, as well as three Jedi, were killed during the attack,[1] and the battalion was completely wiped out.[5] The Battle of Jabiim continued to rage for weeks on the planet, and in the end the Republic troops were forced to retreat from Jabiim after suffering enormous casualties.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The 43rd Battalion was first mentioned in Republic HoloNet News Core Edition 14:9:01, an in-universe HoloNet News issue published in Star Wars Insider 69 in 2003. The issue was written by Pablo Hidalgo and served as a tie-in to the Star Wars: Republic: The Battle of Jabiim comic published by Dark Horse Comics.[1] The battalion later received an entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 2008.[5]
